Viking Female Shaman/Volva Pendant
This pendant is based on an original Viking Age find from Sweden and it may depict a Volva.
Volvas/Volur feature extensively in the Icelandic sagas, where they are depicted as women of considerable standing. A type of female seer or shaman, they were believed to have the power of prophecy and were often consulted in important matters.
According to the Ynglinga Saga, these female mystics were believed to have the same magic powers as the god Odin, including 'to have known beforehand the predestined fate of men, or their not yet completed lot'. While in the Landnámabók manuscript, a Volva is described as the 'filler of inlets' because she used her magic powers to fill the fjords with fish during a famine.
The pendant measures circa 40 mm in length and is made from nickel-free pewter. It comes complete with a black neck-tie.
